About the reading timer
Set a reading session, press start and read until the chime. Timed reading builds a daily habit, makes reading logs easy (20 minutes a night is a common school target) and lets you measure your reading speed.
Use the calculator below the timer to turn words read into words per minute. Most adults read non-fiction at roughly 200–260 words per minute.

Reading speed (WPM) calculator
Read for a set time, then count or estimate the words (a typical paperback page holds about 250–300 words).
One-minute fluency checks
Teachers often measure words correct per minute (WCPM): the student reads an unfamiliar grade-level passage aloud for exactly one minute while you count errors. Choose the 1-minute preset, start the timer as the student begins, and subtract errors from total words read.

Frequently asked questions
How long should kids read each day?
Many schools ask for 20 minutes of reading a day. The 20-minute preset is set up for exactly that — start it, read, and log the session when the chime rings.
What is a good reading speed?
Adults typically read around 200–260 words per minute for non-fiction and faster for light fiction. Comprehension matters more than raw speed, so test yourself on what you read.
Can I use this as a timer for reading fluency?
Yes. Use the 1-minute preset for oral reading fluency checks and count words correct per minute.
Will the timer ring loudly?
The reading timer uses a soft bell. You can mute it with the Sound button and rely on the visual display.
Is it free, and do I need an app?
It is completely free with no sign-up or download. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers.
